Children in Need Auction Prize |
16/11/2009 |
2Excel and The Blades are pleased to announce their support of BBC’s Children in Need for the 2nd year. After the success of the prize given in 2008 we have donated a ‘Fly with The Blades and the Vulcan’ prize with all the trimmings, including a formation flight along side the Vulcan for 2 people, to Terry Wogan’s ‘Things Money Can’t Buy Auction’. The auction is set to take place on Terry’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast show between 8am-9am on Tuesday 17th November. Remember to tune in and get bidding for this once-in-a-lifetime unforgettable experience!
In 2008, BBC Radio 2 raised over £500,000 for Children in Need and The Blades raised 5% of that. The money raised from the 2009's 'Things Money Can't Buy' Auction will go to the Charity to enable them to continue to make positive changes to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.
You can see a preview of all the auction lots, including ‘Fly with The Blades and the Vulcan’, on the BBC Radio 2 website http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/wake-up-to-wogan/terrys-children-in-need-09-auction/tuesday/ |

Tribute to the Normandy Veterans' Association |
28/09/2009 |
On Sunday 13th September, The Blades paid tribute to hundreds of veterans at the last en-mass reunion of the Normandy Veterans' Association. The event took place at IWM Duxford with hundreds of veterans and guests attending to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.
The day included a flypast by a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane with The Blades providing their own unique form of air cover to salute the veterans before a moving Sunset Ceremony and the parading of the Standards.
"As veterans ourselves, we're absolutely delighted to be a part of today's celebration", said Director of 2Excel, Chris Norton OBE DFC, "it's a real honour to be able to meet and pay tribute to these incredibly brave people who, 65 years ago, so valiantly protected the freedom we take for granted today".

14 Loops with a cup of tea |
18/09/2009 |
Corporal Stewart Hefti, a RAF Serviceman injured in Iraq 2 years ago, has set a world record by flying with The Blades to complete 14 loop-the-loops while drinking a cup of tea.
The stunt was part of a fundraising initiaative for RAF personnel and their families. With 2 years of help from the Regional Rehabilitation Unit at RAF Honington, Corporal Hefti has recovered sufficiently to be able to rach his goal of rejoining his colleagues on front line operations.
"When we first took off I was more worried about the tea staying in the cup, but after the first loop I realised it would stay and started to enjoy it more. It was only after we landed that I started to feel a bit queasy! I just wanted to give something back to the RAFA who did so much for me and my family after my injury"

Children in Need |
09/09/2009 |
Melanie Wrinch, the Children in Need charity auction winner, won a luxury day with The Blades which she and her family spent at Sywell Aerodrome on the 2nd September.
They were able to take part in an aerial oreinteering mssion which included planning for their team to find a target from the air. This was followed by a helicopter lesson before a totally unique formation aerobatic flight. The day finished with their very own private display by The Blades. The auction raised £24,000 for Children in Need.
Terry Wogan quotes from Melanie's letter "We had an absolutely amazing day and thoroughly recommend it. The Blades very kindly let all 4 of us fly in their aerobatic planes as well as in a helicopter. In terms of organistaion of the day, friendliness and commitment to serve, the management, pilots and staff all excel- in fact they are one of the most impressive and inspiring group of people we have been fortunate enough to meet. Our 17 and 15 year old boys described the experince as 'insane' and 'exhilirating', referring to the aerobatics in the air! I will always treasure the memory of being up in the air and looking out to see 3 other small planes with my husband and 2 sons and each of us grinnig from ear to ear, as we flew in formation. Even better to know that we helped Children in Need at the same time! If The Blades offer Children in Need the chance to auction another day, snap it up and I hope you raise at least as much again"

The Blades at The 2009 World Aerobatic Championships |
01/09/2009 |
On the windy Saturday evening The Blades closed the show at the ‘unlimited’ World Aerobatics Championships. The competition was marred by tragedy for the American Team and dominated by the French and Russian Teams who took the majority of the prizes. As the curtain fell on the podium The Blades treated the expert audience and competitors alike to a stunning display to ensure that the event ended with a suitable finale. Blade 1 Myles Garland comments: “With all those world-class pilots watching, there was always going to be a little extra pressure, but the evening had a beautiful English autumnal feel that was a moody backdrop for our ‘order out of chaos’ and I think The Blades created a fitting end to this year’s World Championships.” This exceptional photograph by Derek Duffill (who has himself flown with The Blades) catches the event perfectly.

Wellingborough and Kettering Come to a Stand-still for The Blades and the Vulcan |
31/08/2009 |
Four lucky competition winners had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly just a few feet away from the iconic Vulcan on Saturday 29 August. Flying in the front seats of The Blades’ four orange and black ‘airliners’, the Daily Mail and Vulcan to the Sky Trust winners were treated to a completely unique view of the huge cold-war bomber as it flew 10mile racetracks over Northamptonshire at 150 knots. Terry Feegrade, Director of MK Lamps writes “I cannot stop talking about the occasion and the thrill of flying with the Blades was wonderful.” Bob Dunn, writes “It was not only an experience of a lifetime, it was also a privilege to be able to fly with the Blades and to see 558 at close quarters within the environment in which she is obviously meant to be... it put a whole new meaning to 'putting air beneath her wings'. The whole day was a complete thrill, especially the loops (I'm still smiling).” Sue Allison agrees: “I will never forget the view of being under The Vulcan and the enjoyable `loop the loops, I could have flown all day and not come down”.

BBC Reporter Defies Her Fear of Flying with The Blades |
24/08/2009 |
BBC South Reporter Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes overcame her fear of flying by looping and rolling with The Blades Aerobatic Team. She conquered her vertigo by riding in Andy Evans’ front seat, laughing her way through a series of loops and rolls from Shoreham Airport in Sussex. Once back on terra firma she couldn’t stop herself smiling saying of her unforgettable experience “That was, just, the most incredible experience I’ve ever had... awesome... awesome!”

A CHANGE IS IN THE AIR |
19/05/2009 |
There is a shift in dynamic for 2009 as The Blades welcome a new team leader. Myles Garland, previously Blade 4, takes charge as Blade 1, whilst Dave Slow and Andy Evans remain as Blades 2 and 3. Last year’s rookie, Mark Cutmore takes up the prestigious role as the solo display pilot, Blade 4. Keep your eyes peeled though, as there will be guest performances from the original Blade 1; the acclaimed Andy Offer OBE and his eponymous aircraft (G-OFFO).
“Despite the difficult winter weather, this winter has seen a huge amount of hard work.’” said Blade 1, Myles Garland: “Not only did we all retrain in our new positions, we then continued to develop the display manoeuvres and the overall formation precision. We love being back in front of the crowds during the summer season.”

13 Aircraft, 11 Counties, 3 Days… |
24/04/2009 |
Jason Phelan has taken on the head spinning challenge of flying aerobatics in a multitude of aircraft across the UK.
Jason challenge is set to take place on 24-26th April with the finale, and hardest test, being flying with the world famous Blades aerobatic Team. Jason is doing all of this in order to raise money and the profile of a charity called Fly2Help. Fly2Help’s aim is to raise people’s horizons via the medium of flight, working with individuals, groups and like minded charities to stretch physical, mental and emotional boundaries that have been set by life trauma or tragedy.
The Blades are delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile charity. If you too would like to support Jason and Fly2Help, please visit his just giving page. www.justgiving.com/jasonphelan
“Jason is a very keen (and I might add good) photographer and The Blades and I have known him for a number of years. We are thrilled to be able to help him in a lifelong challenge (if not a slightly mad one)!" said Kat, The Blades PRO, “See you on Sunday”.

THE BLADES AND BECKWORTH EMPORIUM |
09/04/2009 |
The much anticipated opening of Beckworth Emporium landed on the morning of the 9th April and The Blades were there to support their neighbours. Beckworth Emporium is only a few hundred yards from The Blades HQ at Sywell Aerodrome and it has been rumoured that The Blades did in fact lift the spirits of those involved at Beckworth when they were getting the project up and running.
Beckworth Emporium boasts a fantastic range of fresh produce, with locally sourced vegetables and plants, food hall and restaurant.
“We were delighted to be able to give something back to the community and support a local event” said Blade 2 Andy Evans. “Kat, our PRO, was so impressed with the set up that I wouldn’t be surprised if you catch a few of us down there in our flying suits doing our shopping!”

THE BLADES AND THE SNOW |
03/02/2009 |
It may be a little late, but snow has finally fallen on Sywell. Only problem is, The Blades were in the middle of training for the 2009 display season!
Well, for now at least, the pilots will have to contend themselves with building snowmen and throwing snowballs!
Any wacky ideas on how to make our aircraft 'snow-worthy' would be much appreciated. Anyone heard of 'The Snow Blades'...?

THE FOUR PLANES by TOM TAYLOR |
05/12/2008 |
"An exciting, roaring, crescending drone drew us out into the garden to search the sky. Our eyes scrolled up and down across the screen of patches of blue amid white, fluffy, sun-edged clouds which were rolling along and over, ominous banks of grey. 'There they are!' we both yelled as four planes in close formation came into view, their wings glinting in the sun.
They climbed high and, spreading out, rolled over backwards into a loop the loop. Their engines revved as they completed their loop and ironed themselves level again. While they were on their backs a tingle went down my spine. Two of them started to climb vertically, twisting, showing flashes of their smart bodywork. Suddenly they swooped sharply into a nose-dive. As they recovered they flew swiftly like sparrows out of sight."
The above piece was written by a young boy by the name of Tom after watching The Blades. Our thanks go to Tom and his teacher Mrs Mister for sending in such a wonderful piece of prose.

BLADES VISIT TO ST FRANCIS SCHOOL |
18/11/2008 |
Last week The Blades pilots were treated to extraordinary day at St Francis School in Lincoln. St. Francis is a day school with residential facilities for young people with physical and/or medical disabilities. It is a centre of educational excellence and opportunity, whose aim is to promote life learning and to give their students the tools and confidence to take their place in a rapidly changing society.
The Blades were treated to lunch cooked by the students before being challenged and beaten at a game of pool! The Blades gave a presentation on who they are and what they do to the Post 16 students, who after the presentation had some incredible questions for The Blades. The Blades were then given a tour of all the other classrooms to meet some of the other children, including a chance to for Blade 3, Andy, to steal a kiss from his beautiful daughter Milly.
“It has been a fantastic day and I am definitely coming back to have some cooking lessons!” said Team PRO, Kat.

THE FINAL PUSH |
12/09/2008 |

As the season draws in, The Blades have been a little busy to say the least!
In the last 3 weeks the Team have displayed to the 4 corners of the UK in an attempt to share their display with as many people as humanly possible.
This final drive started almost immediately after Airbourne and saw The Blades displaying a total of 18 times. The Blades flew at Weymouth Carnival, Clacton on Sea, Sywell, Dunsfold, Eye, Bournemouth, Shoreham, Portrush, Southport and even deployed to the Channel Islands for 4 days.
They managed to display in front of over a million people, which even included their own families as part of their home-base Airshow, Sywell.
In between all this though, The Blades also held, hosted and organised 5 big corporate days and even managed to take some time out to go an talk to some budding pilots when on the Island of Guernsey earlier this month.
"It has been an incredibly busy period for the Team" said team PRO, Kat, "but an amazingly rewarding one. We are already looking forward to seeing what next year holds..."

BLADES GO AIRBOURNE |
19/08/2008 |
The Blades enjoyed a fantastic four days at the Eastbourne Airshow, the proclaimed ‘world’s biggest seafront airshow’. For once the Great British Summer prevailed and the public were able to enjoy four sun-drenched days at Airbourne, with an impressive assortment of displays both on the ground and in the air. The Blades certainly provided the ‘wow’ factor, enthralling the watching crowds with an exhilarating show, although they had to be on top form to grab the attention away from the incredible Go Fast Jet Pack Rocketman!
The Team’s weekend by the seaside also served as an emotional homecoming event for Blade 3 Andy Evans, a native to the Sussex area.

BUSY LITTLE BLADES |
25/07/2008 |
The Blades are currently on a weeks leave to recover from a very busy but very enjoyable couple of weeks prior. Not only did The Blades effectively deploy down to Farnborough for the whole week for the Farnborough International Airshow displaying in front of internationally acclaimed delegates and a ‘whoop-ing-ly’ excited crowds, but they also took part in displays at Lowestoft, RAF Cottesmore, East Fortune, Edinburgh, Sunderland and Bray.

TRUE HEROES |
20/07/2008 |
During Farnborough Airshow, The Blades were lucky enough to meet some real life heroes!
As we are all aware, our Armed Forces are being worked pretty hard at the moment on operations far and wide. With The Blades extremely strong connection to the Armed forces, 2Excel, The Blades parent company, wanted to give something back.
“We try to display at as many military events as we can” said 2Excel Director and retired Squadron Commander Chris Norton “The military is our history, it's is where we have all come from and we will support the Armed Forces in anyway we can”
In this case, it was to fly some wounded service personnel. The chaps that flew had all been wounded in recent conflicts and are now dedicating their time, before returning to their units, to draw attention to what is happening abroad, trying to rally support for the troops currently deployed and to raise the awareness for the Help for Heroes Charity.
“The charity Help for Heroes was launched in October 2007 in response to the desire of ordinary people to do something practical to help our wounded servicemen and women. As individuals we are powerless to prevent war and we feel helpless that we are unable to stop our men and women from being killed and wounded. By joining together as Help for Heroes, we are doing something practical to help; we are doing our bit.”
All of The Blades were honoured to meet such a courageous bunch and a military sense of humour was enjoyed by all. The Blades hope to continue to work with these guys so hopefully you’ll see them looping and rolling with The Blades on a TV screen near you soon.

THE SUN SHINES ON BIGGIN HILL |
09/06/2008 |
Biggin Hill International Air Fair is one of the country's most prestigious Air Shows, attracting people from far and wide with their diverse selection of Air displays and ground activities. In 2007 The Blades were lucky enough to be presented with the Shell Aviation Formation Flying Trophy, an accolade to their flying ability and increasing aptitude at flying gyroscopic manoeuvres whilst in formation.
This year the sun shone on both days which lead to record numbers attending the event. In fact at 14:00 on Sunday the organisers had to make the decision to shut the gates as the crowd size continued to grow out of control. The weekend was filled with an incredible array of aircraft from the Breitling Jet Team to Team Guinot Wingwalkers to the Bleriot. The Blades were one of the closing acts on both days and even received a standing ovation on their final taxi in.
“What a great way to spend the weekend” commented Team Leader, Blade 1, Andy Offer.

HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE |
02/06/2008 |
The start of the UK Display season got off to a bit of a bumpy start, but The Blades, never ones to let something as simple as the weather stop them, battled through, displaying their professionalism, heritage and expertise.
The Blades started with the Maxims Casino Southend Airshow on Sunday 25th May, but the British weather being what it is, decided to curtail their plans! The Blades did however make it to the Seafront show early on Bank Holiday Monday flying in both the morning and the afternoon. The display was ‘oooh-ed and ahhh-ed!!’ at by all who saw them, leaving no doubt in the crowds mind that The Blades were not going to let a bit of wind and rain get the better of them.
From Southend, The Blades shot back to base, to refuel and repack before departing for Germany’s Capital, Berlin for their Airshow, ILA. ILA is an enormous show with displays from the A380, Eurofighter Typhoon and the Indian Air Force Helicopter Display Team, Sarang. The Blades arrived in Berlin on Wednesday afternoon to start preparing for their Validation display that evening. The weather was glorious, allowing the Team to demonstrate their brand new display without hindrance. The Blades remained in Berlin displaying at ILA until Saturday afternoon when they hopped back across the water to turn the aircraft around, again in lightening speed, and prepare for yet another show.
Royal Air Force Cosford was the next port of call for The Blades, for the annual Cosford Airshow. As one of the Team's favourite displays, The Blades were in high spirits as they departed for the show. The Team put on an incredible performance which led to comments such as “Red Arrows Plus”, “How do they do it?” and a standing ovation as they shut down their engines and opened the canopies. This is however, only the beginning as the Team prepare to display in the UK and Europe for as long as the weather will allow! The Blades will be back in action almost immediately with the next display at the Isle of Man TT Races on Tuesday 3rd June, before heading down to Kent, for the Biggin Hill International Airshow on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June.

HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCE WILLIAM'S WINGS GRADUATION |
22/04/2008 |
On Friday 11th April, The Blades displayed at RAF Cranwell as part of a Wings Graduation. The ceremony is as old as the Royal Air Force itself and is a celebration of its Pilots and Navigators being awarded their ‘wings’ and their official certification of their aircrew speciality.
All Wings Graduations are incredibly important as they represent the dedication and hard work through the training and the completion of their basic flying phase. However, this Wings Grad was a little special as it helped to mark the 90th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force, a date that was marked the previous week by a Flypast with the World Famous Red Arrows and four Typhoons over London.
This Graduation was also slightly unusual as the RAF had gathered together all its Fast-Jet and Rotary Students at RAF Cranwell as opposed to hosting individual graduations at their home bases. Attending the Grad was HRH The Prince of Wales who was there in both an official and personal capacity. He was there to award the aircrew their wings, and to support his eldest son HRH Prince William who was there to receive his own wings after his 3 month flying detachment to the Air Force from the Army, where he learnt to fly 3 types of the RAF’s aircraft.
The Students and their guests were treated to an exceptional ceremony in College Hall before moving down to the flight line to watch a huge selection of Flypasts and Displays. The flying including a 9-ship demonstration of Tucanos from RAF Linton-on-Ouse and a selection of aircraft flypasts from Tornado F3’s to VC10’s. The Blades were the only full time, civilian team to display and the 12 minute show went down a treat. It was the Teams 2nd public display of 2008 and it and whilst the weather did its best to curtail the display, The Team battled on and put on a great show.

BRITISH TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIPS |

To celebrate the British Touring Car Championship last weekend, the team at Rockingham invited The Blades to add a touch of aerial entertainment during the lunch break. It was The Blades debut display at the International Race Circuit and was one that was thoroughly enjoyed by both pilots and spectators alike.
“It is really exciting to be able to display at a new display site” said Team Leader Andy Offer “and it is an added bonus for it to be at such a great event”.

International Confex, currently being held at Earls Court 'til the 14th February, is the largest Events exhibition in the country and attracts the industry's top professionals. 2Excel decided in November to arrange to exhibit at Confex and all efforts were made to make sure that the true corporate image was portrayed.
The efforts that the team have made though, have not gone un-noticed! An external auditor from the industry's trade press was given the task of choosing who they thought offered the best Corporate Service... and she choose 2Excel!!
2Excel's Directors and The Blades Pilots are still at Confex and will be exhibiting for another day. So if you're in London and looking for something extra-specially amazing, please visit the team in the Luxury Pavillion, Stand No. R513. |

THE BLADES SEND EMMERDALE SOARING |
31/01/2008 |
Just before Christmas on a bitterly cold day in Yorkshire, The Blades were preparing for their UK Soap debut. ITV’s hit TV Show Emmerdale had written the Aerobatic Display Team into their storyline earlier on in the year and the day had finally come to take to the skies.
The story begins with Viv and Val who are supposed to be taking part in a charity flight with The Blades but there is a twist to the tale, and without giving too much away, the most unlikely characters end up in the front seats of the aircraft.
The episode will be broadcast on Tuesday 5th February on ITV1 at 7pm and then again on ITV2 on the following day.
This is definitely one not to be missed!

A VISIT FROM UPTON PRIMARY SCHOOL |
22/01/2008 |
On Tuesday morning, Sywell Aerodrome became host to approximately 40 pupils from the recently opened Upton Meadows Primary School in Northampton. The children were treated to an in-depth tour of the airfield including trips to the Museum, Brooklands Flying School, Flylight and of course 2Excel- home of The Blades.
After being given the chance to explore one of the Teams’ bright orange and black Extra 300 LP aircraft, the children were asked to draw their impression of The Blades. The pictures astounded both teachers and pilots alike, with new paint schemes and designs being produced by the minute. The drawings were so fantastic that The Blades decided to put all of the childrens’ pictures up on their website, please go to Fans photos in ‘The Blades Zone’.
“It was brilliant to see such artistic flare, imagination and enthusiasm” said Blade 4 Myles Garland.

AIM TO INSPIRE AND ENGAGE AS PART OF ENTERPRISE WEEK |
19/11/2007 |
As part of National Enterprise Week, The Blades opened their doors to just under 70 school children on Thursday. The students were from Moulton School, Overstone Primary School and Raeburn School. Enterprise Week was originally set up to encourage children out of the classroom to experience the real life working world. It has evolved, not only to be recognised throughout the country, but to be able to allow unusual and exciting companies, such as 2Excel to get involved.
The day began at 9:30 and after an inspiring, truthful and frank talk from The Blades leader, Andy Offer, all the children were raring to go. The students were then split up into 4 groups, Team Harrier, Jaguar, Hawk and Typhoon with their very own Blades Pilot to navigate them through the 4 activities planned for the day. The students got a chance to get up close and personal with The Blades aircraft, as well as dressing up Top-Gun style in the all the equipment that the Team wear to fly.
The day was measured by its success and was rounded off perfectly with the arrival of Northampton Saints Player Sean Lamont.
“The pupils and staff had an amazing time and even today, pupils have been coming up to me and saying what a great day they had” Mrs Nelson, Moulton School

THE BLADES TACKLE THE TIGERS |
08/11/2007 |
Yesterday, The Blades would have turned English patriots, rugby fans and women alike, a very distinctive colour of green as they were visited by the Leicester Tigers along with 8 members of the England Rugby Team.
The internationally acclaimed rugby boys were invited by Martin Corry to go flying with The Blades as part of his testimonial year. Martin, who has flown with The Blades before, is not only team skipper for Leicester, but has also played in three World Cups. During his ten years with the Tigers, Martin has won five league titles, two European Cups and the Anglo- Welsh Cup. With 64 caps for England he has a whole line up of mates who were ready to give him banter as they flew with The Blades. The tribute video promises to be something special…

THE RED ARROWS COME TO PLAY AT SYWELL |
01/11/2007 |
At 14:45 yesterday The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, came to visit The Blades Aerobatic Team at their home ground of Sywell Aerodrome.
The Reds put on a fantastic show as they looped and rolled in their infamous 9-ship formations. The practice display was all part of their pre-deployment training for the Middle East. Sywell Aerodrome provides an unusual and challenging display site for the Red Arrows and allows them to practice away from their familiar home territory of RAF Scampton.
As the only full time civilian aerobatic team in the UK, The Blades maintain a close and strong relationship with the Red Arrows and in this situation were more than happy to help some old friends. Whilst the display was not a public display, The Reds commanded the attention of anyone near the airfield and delighted anyone who saw them.

UNICEF CHARITY MASKED BALL |
30/10/2007 |
On the evening of Friday 26th October UNICEF held their annual Masked Ball to raise money for the Unite for Children, Unite against Aids campaign. The aim is to save the lives of children and to protect, care and support many more children who have lost parents or who are living with HIV.
On evenings such as this, the majority of the money raised for the cause comes from the Auction prizes which have been generously donated by companies near and far. Prizes ranged from exclusive tours of Coronation Street to weekends for two in Monaco. However, the top prize on this evening was something pretty unusual! 2Excel had donated 2 flights with their aerobatic display team, The Blades. The lot was the last of the evening and after much anticipation and excitement it sold for a considerable amount.
“We feel a strong commitment to support charities such as UNICEF” said 2Excel Director Chris Norton. “We need to continue to raise awareness of the consequences of HIV and AIDS and the appalling impact it has on life”.

MEETING SOME OLD FRIENDS… |
26/10/2007 |
The Blades have been fortunate this year to celebrate their military and flying heritage with some memorable old friends.
They say that ‘a picture is worth 1000 words’, and we couldn’t agree more.
Please scroll down to see some exceptional footage of The Blades in a different kind of formation!

A RED ONE |
25/10/2007 |
On 26th September The Blades met up with a very familiar red friend. This meeting was by no means incidental, it was part of The Blades strategy to pay homage to their heritage.
As the single Red Arrow pulled back on the throttle The Blades instinctively tucked in behind. The Hawk flown by Red 7, Paul (Pablo) O’Grady was airbourne, prior to a Red Arrows ‘In Season Practice’ (ISP), to rendezvous with The Blades for a photo-call. The formation flight was a huge success and great fun was had by all.

A HARRIER ONE |
24/10/2007 |
In association with Royal Air Force Wittering, The Blades paid tribute to their past and their future, with a formation sortie with an old friend and colleague (both Pilot and Aircraft).
The Harrier GR9 from 20 (R) Squadron, the Harrier Operational Conversion Unit, was flown by Sqn Ldr Scott Adey. The Harrier (call-sign Striker) was the lead in the formation and gave Blades leader, Andy Offer a chance to demonstrate his formation skills.
“Those were the days” was the comment made by Blade 4 as Blades 1 called the team off the Harrier, as they prepared to showcase the display on their old home ground.

FINAL AIRSHOW 2007 |
25/09/2007 |
With the 2007 UK display season drawing to an end, The Blades were determined to make sure they left Southport something to remember!
The Team arrived at Blackpool Airport on Friday 21st September in preparation for the displays on Saturday and Sunday. Although the weather on both days was a little murky, the sun eventually blasted its way through, opening up to allow The Blades to perform their full aerobatic show.
To give the season its final fanfare, The Blades treated the North West to a second impromptu display on Sunday, delighting the crowd.
“The second display was very gratefully received” said Display Director Ray Thilthorpe. “I know all the pilots from a past life, and whilst I regard them as the best civilian display team in the country, I know that they still have a lot more potential. When the attending public at Southport go away happy, I go away happy".

SHOREHAM AIRSHOW |
20/09/2007 |
After a morning display in Holland, The Blades arrived at Shoreham on Saturday afternoon to hear the tragic news of what had happened.
When the show resumed The Blades performed their display and paid tribute to their fellow aviator. The sun shone deep into the evening, finally setting as the last of the crowds departed. With Sunday came a threatening and unstable sky which deteriorated gradually throughout the day. The Blades, who were closing the Airshow for 2007, took the brunt of the bad weather, but true to their heritage and professionalism put on a incredible show.
All proceeds from the Airshow goes to the Royal Air Force Association, and The Blades were pleased to be able, not only to take part in the event, but also to make a donation to the charity.
The Team are next displaying at Southport Airshow and everyone is crossing fingers and toes for good weather to end the 2007 season.

THE BLADES TAKE ON THE CHANNEL ISLANDS |
15/09/2007 |
On Tuesday 11th September, The Blades with their support crew left Sywell for the idyllic settings of the Channel Islands to take part in ‘The Battle of Britain Week” in Guernsey and Jersey.
While the Team were in Guernsey, they hosted a corporate event in association with one of the islands PR agency, CMA PR. The corporate day was an outstanding success, with all the passengers vowing to return again next year.
On Thursday, The Blades took to the skies to perform their aerial repertoire of daring twists, turns tumbles, defying the laws of aerodynamics. With the incredible turning capability of the Extra 300, The Blades kept both displays neatly tucked in the bays, right in front of the crowds.
“The weather for both displays was fabulous and the hospitality on both islands was, as usual, second to none” said Blade 4 Myles Garland.

THE BLADES BREAK THE MOULD WITH CROWD REAR ARRIVALS |
15/08/2007 |
Being at the forefront of advance display flying is nothing new for The Blades, but at the weekend they demonstrated a new capability to the crowds at Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. Due to The Team's heritage, professionalism and ever evolving and improving display, The Blades applied for "A universal crowd rear arrival" and as a testament to their skill and ability, they got it!
A crowd rear arrival is something that has not been seen in the UK or Europe for more than 10 years and is where the team actually start the display from behind the crowd-line and enter the display over their heads.
"It's a great addition to the display at it provides a fantastic entrance and immediately catches everyone's attention" said 2Excel Director Chris Norton. "So next time your watching the display, expect something unexpected!!"
At 2Excel safety comes first and The Team practised long and hard encompassing the new move before debuting it to the public, and we hope you'll agree; it's breathtaking.

THE BLADES SHOW LOWESTOFT THEY'VE GOT BALLS |
30/07/2007 |
In the glorious but somewhat blustery weather on the East Coast, The Blades stormed in to display at Lowestoft Seafront Air Festival on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th July. The event, rumoured to attract a quarter of a million people, was a huge success despite the unstable weather. The Blades performed a full display, looping and rolling all the way along the Seafront.
The Blades also released their limited edition beach balls to the lucky but unsuspecting public. People were rushing from left to right to get their paws on one of the orange black beach balls sign-written with The Blades logo. The beach was then amass with black and orange as people kicked, bounced and cuddled the inflatables.
"I think next year we'll need to bring millions more beach balls" said Team Commentator, Chris Margiotta (Mags) "It would be great to have enough balls to give away so that the Pilots can actually see them from the sky."

THE BLADE BABES |
30/07/2007 |
The 28th and 29th of July saw something unusual happen in the North! At the Sunderland International Airshow, The Blades gave the spectators something more than an aerial display to look at. On top of performing their breathtaking 12 minute display, they also provided on the ground entertainment in the form of six gorgeous Blades Babes. The Babes were at Sunderland to challenge everyone and anyone to a game of Volleyball.
The Blades Babes went down a treat, with a constant stream of willing contenders the girls ducked and dived letting nothing get in the way of winning!!
The most anticipated match of the weekend was The Blades vs The Blades Babes. In true style The Blades left the girls speechless.

THE BLADES TAKE TO THE SKIES AT SILVERSTONE |
11/07/2007 |
With ITV's Grand Prix front man Steve Rider in pole position with The Blades, the Team took to the skies to create an unseen spectacle in the early evening sky above Silverstone on Saturday 7th July.
With a clear blue backdrop, The Blades demonstrated professionalism, skill and dedication, themes that were to run true on both the ground and the air over the weekend.
"I've displayed at Silverstone a number of times over the past with The Reds but it was fantastic to give both Steve and Holly (Radio 5 Live) a 'bird's eye view' of a circuit which they both know so well" said Andy Offer, Blade 1.

THE WEATHER BREAKS FOR THE BLADES |
26/06/2007 |
On Sunday the 24th June, The Blades managed to do two full shows despite the weather's best attempt to stop them!
After an hour plus transit in doom and gloom, The Blades arrived at Carlisle Airport to prepare for the first of their two displays of the day. They were in Cumbria to display for the Cumbria Police Roadsafe Day, which has been set up in order to raise awareness of the dangers the roads present. The Blades were drafted in for the second year running to draw the crowds to the event and to demonstrate that being responsible and professional does not have to mean being boring!
"It's great to be a part of something as worthwhile as Roadsafe" said Blade 4, Myles Garland, "especially as we are all keen bikers".
The Blades then landed back at Carlisle before whizzing off over the pond to Ireland, for the International Salthill Airshow in Galway. The weather complained all the way there, but just as The Blades called for take-off for the display, the clouds parted and the sun shone through. The display looked fantastic as the aircraft glistened in the sun with the clear blue sky behind, and was made even more dramatic with the moody clouds either side.
The Blades ended the show to a roar of applause, whistling, and shouting from the crowd. "The Blades were fantastic" said one onlooker, "they just keep getting better and better".
You can catch The Blades at Waddington International Airshow on Saturday 30th and Sunday 1st July. |

COSFORD STANDS TALL FOR THE BLADES |
13/06/2007 |
After a misty and murky start to The Cosford Airshow on Sunday 10th June, the day finished in glorious sunshine, with most of the crowd on their feet applauding The Blades pilots after a spectacular show.
"I think that was the best reception I've ever had at an Airshow" said Blade 2, Dave Slow.
The Blades arrived at Cosford at lunchtime and spent the afternoon walking around the show, meeting the public and signing autographs. There was also a huge interest in the text competition to 'Win a Flight' with the Team, the number of which, has just been painted on the underneath of the Aircraft so that it can be seen from the ground.
The Blades next display is in Holland for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. |

"FLYBOYS" TO FLYING BOYS |
05/06/2007 |
On the 2nd of June, Biggin Hill Air Fair was host to the launch of 'FlyBoys', the new action packed movie about young Americans who volunteered for the French military before the U.S. entered World War I, and became the country's first fighter pilots. The cast were in Kent to promote the film surrounded by the original war time aircraft.
David Ellison, one of the leading cast members also happened to be an Extra 300 Pilot back in the States, so The Blades took the opportunity of flying a FlyBoy! The Blades also flew prize winners from LBC Radio and The History Channel who had won the 'once and lifetime' chance to fly with the Team and LBC presenter Michael Traboulsi.
Due to time restrictions The Blades only flew a formation of 3, but Gerry Lewcock (LBC winner) had the time of his life. "I've worked with aircraft all for such a long time, but never been given the chance to experience something like this!"
"It was a real pleasure to fly two such deserving prize winners and we thoroughly enjoyed having both Gerry and Toby (History Channel winner) as part of our Team" said Kat Nicoll, PRO. |

THE BLADES WIN BEST DISPLAY AT BIGGIN |
05/06/2007 |
The Blades blew Biggin Hill International Air Fair away for the second year this weekend, when they impressed everyone, including the most critical of aviators, with their brand new display for 2007.
The Air Fair which boasts some of the best aerobatic displays in the world was held on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd of June, even the weather maintained a degree of excellence for the somewhat 160,000 people that turned up over the weekend.
The show was packed with displays from singletons, formations, jets to role demos, but at the end of day the prestigious Battle of Britain Trophy for the best display was awarded to the newest Team on the circuit.
"We are over the moon" said Team Leader Andy Offer, "to be awarded such a trophy, considering the company we were in was an incredible honour. We hope to improve the show every year and have worked extremely hard to try and come up with something out of the ordinary, I'm pleased that all the practice has paid off."
You can catch The Blades' breath-taking display next weekend at the RAF Cosford International Airshow. |

THE BLADES BATTLED IT OUT AT SOUTHEND |
30/05/2007 |
The Blades returned to UK last week to display at the Westcliff Casino Southend Airshow on the 27th and 28th May. As everybody waited with baited breath for the wonderful sunny Bank Holiday weather to appear, it never did! This however did not dampen the spirits of Britain's hottest formation Team.
The Blades, whose experience is second to none, used their knowledge and expertise to battle the wind and rain to giving the Southend spectators something extra special to watch.
"It was a bit bumpy" said the Team's newest recruit, Blade 2 Dave Slow. "But we are really pleased that we managed to display, and I hope that everyone enjoyed the new show."

THE BLADES GIVE WORLD SUPER BIKE RIDERS THE RIDE OF THEIR LIFE |
24/05/2007 |
On the 24th May, in the sleepy suburbs of Northampton, two sets of very different professional adrenaline junkies came together. The Blades, the world's only globally accredited aerobatic airline and the World Super Bike Championship front runners, met for a press launch extraganza ahead of this weekend's race at Silverstone.
To give the Riders a taste of something extraordinary The Blades, under their Air Operators Certificate, flew both Troy Bayliss, current world champion and Troy Corser, whilst fellow Racers, Max Baggi and James Toseland (current 2007 championship leader) watched in anticipation.
Flown by Blades 2, and 3, the Riders were tipped and turned, rolled and stalled whilst only being a few feet away from the other Extra 300 LP aircraft with a number of the industries top journalists in them.
"I thought I had the best job in world" said Troy Corser " but I think you do!"
The Blades will be setting the race off to a flying start on Sunday at 13:00. "It was great to meet the Riders ahead of the race" said Blade 3 and World Super Bike fan Myles Garland. "They all now know what the display looks like from the sky, and I hope they enjoy as much from the ground." |

THE BLADES GIVE SOMETHING BACK TO BAHRAIN |
11/05/2007 |
The Blades, who have been on deployment in the Middle East for just under three months, decided to host an event for 21 Orphans from the Royal Charity.
The group of 21 boys ranging in age from 6-24 enjoyed the privilege of spending the morning with The Blades at their hangar at The Bahrain International Airport. They were treated to a royal welcome from the Team and given a detailed brief on light aircraft, the equipment used, safety precautions and the complex engineering of the four Extra aircraft described by Blade 1 as “the Ferrari of the Sky”.
After a sumptuous lunch and refreshments provided by the Airport, the children were split into groups with their own Blades Pilot to take part in the four activities arranged. These included dressing in Flying suits with Parachutes and Helmets, soaking members of the organisation with water from the Airport’s enormous Fire truck, visiting the Americans who are stationed out in Bahrain and being given an insight into Flying Dynamics.
Later, by private VIP bus, the boys were taken to the Fun and Joy Carnival at the Manama Corniche just in front of the Financial Harbour in Bahrain, where they were given VIP access to all areas and rides.
“I think there may be a few budding Pilots” said Blade 3 Andy Evans “it was wonderful to meet such an enthusiastic and creative group”

After a press conference The Blades pilots were given a police escort to Bahrain International Airport to perform their display to VIPs and press only 45 minutes after leaving. Attendees gathered on the private island in front of the Ritz and were treated to one of the most thrilling displays the pilots have done so far. With the financial district in the background The Blades in Bahrain corkscrewed their way through the sky and snaked their way up through the smoky heat of the day. Despite winds early in the morning the conditions were perfect for the pilots in the afternoon.
Media attention was high for the whole event seeing reporters, photographers and cameramen from news outlets across the Gulf. News of a display taking place had leaked throughout The Kingdom of Bahrain the week before prompting the public to stop on the highways to make sure they caught a glimpse of the action. And for those who stopped and for those watching from their office windows they were treated to a live broadcast on Radio Bahrain talking them through the spectacular moves.
"We are proud and honoured to have the Team here" said Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, a member of the Bahrain Royal Family. "Together we build a strong message promoting the Kingdom and the Bahrain Grand Prix to the world, supporting our position as an attractive location to visit." |

HOW TO GET FOUR AIRCRAFT OUT TO THE MIDDLE EAST WITHOUT FIRING THE ENGINES |
17/03/2007 |
All the pilots are now settled in The Kingdom of Bahrain taking advantage of the good weather to train in their Extras. But it has been a long process to move the aircraft to the Middle East with lots of planning, lots of delicate packing and lots of help from engineers.
On 7th February G-ZEXL and G-ZXCL were flown to Wycombe Air Park to be dismantled with G-OFFO and G-ZXEL following on the 13th February. Please visit our photo gallery to see the photos of each stage of the move. The process was as follows:
•The turtle decks were removed.
•All fluids were drained to reduce the risk of fire.
•The spats were taken off.
•The wings and tailplanes were removed. Lots of man power needed!
•The wings were re-branded as "The Blades in Bahrain".
•The pallets and crates arrived at Wycombe to pack the aircraft.
•The aircraft were strapped tightly on to their crates.
•The spinners were removed to make the aircraft 18 inches shorter and more manoeuvrable in the Jumbo.
•The wings were packed in to 30 ft boxes. Again, lots of man power.
•The aircraft were wrapped in cling film to stop animals climbing in the holes during transit.
•A lorry arrived at Wycombe to transport the aircraft via road to Amsterdam.
•The Extras were loaded on to the Jumbo 747 in Amsterdam. It's a tight squeeze with inches to spare. Blade 2 was there to supervise.
•The aircraft were met in Bahrain by Blade 4.
•The planes were rebuilt in the Kingdom of Bahrain and G-OFFO is taken for its first flight in the Middle East. |

FLYING HIGH AFTER A GREAT NIGHT OF NETWORKING |
05/03/2007 |
2Excel and The Blades reached new heights on Monday 19th February at a swanky hotel in the centre of London. Soho Hotel played host to a networking evening organised by the Buyers Networking Club for event organisers from across the UK and The Blades were definitely the talk of the town. Attending the event was Director Chris Norton OBE DFC, Blade 2 Dave Slow, Operations Officer Kat Nicoll and Public Relations Officer Philippa Hall.
A DVD showing all the moves from The Blades' display and 2Excel's Corporate Hospitality events was playing in the background creating quite a stir. The Team spent the evening promoting The Blades and drawing the event organiser's attention to the corporate and private opportunities available. The interest spanned from just fun and excitement to the use of a day with The Blades to cement new relationships, improve internal relations and transform working practices using their development programmes.

THE BLADES HEAD FOR THE MIDDLE EAST |
12/02/2007 |
The Blades are deploying to the Middle East for their first tour ever outside Europe. The only globally accredited aerobatic airline, comprising four former Red Arrows, will be based in the Kingdom of Bahrain for two months from the middle of March to the middle of May.
Two of the high-performance Extra 300 LPs have already left their base in Sywell to begin their 3000 miles trip to Bahrain. They have flown to Wycombe Air Park to be dismantled and packed in purpose built containers. This involves taking the wings off the fuselage and tightly strapping the components to a crate. It will take a total of three weeks to build the crates, dismantle the aircraft, fly them to Bahrain and rebuild them again.
"We're obviously taking a lot of care moving the aircraft" said Blade 1 Andy Offer. "We'll pack them so there'll be no chance of them moving, we'll escort them on the cargo plane and Myles, Blade 4, will be in Bahrain to supervise the off-loading and take them through customs. Three engineers are going to join him a day later to start putting them back together for flying in early March."
The Blades' parent company 2 Excel Aviation has created a strategic alliance with Magnum Events and Exhibitions Management (MEEM) to provide the same services they provide in the UK to the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Capitalizing on the exceptional skills and heritage of the Team, the Blades will provide breathtaking public and private displays, opportunities to fly in the front seat of their Extra 300s, and the chance to use the display team's exceptional capabilities as a marketing and communications tool. They will display at a number of high profile events including the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix - the third FIA Formula One race of 2007. |

THIS MORNING'S HELP A HOSPICE APPEAL |
21/12/2006 |
The Blades battled wind and rain last week to do a surprise display for a children's hospice in Wales. The event was part of ITV 1 This Morning's Help A Hospice Appeal, which aims to raise awareness and money for everyone involved in the hospice movement. The display was almost called off on the morning of Sunday 8th due to the wet and bumpy conditions but the pilots knew how much it would mean to the children at Ty Gobaith in Conwy so they made a brave decision to fly in extremely windy conditions.
"It was touch and go with the weather for a while" said Andy Offer Blade 1. "But we really wanted to give the children one of their best Christmas presents ever." The pilots displayed shortly after eleven thirty over the Conwy valley. They performed a flat display using the aircraft's tight turning circle to give a very intimate display to the children and their families below.
"The display was amazing, absolutely amazing" said Sue who has worked as a nurse since the hospice opened. "It means so much to me when people give their time for the children and their families, especially at Christmas. It's lovely for them all to be together and share such a personal display."
Sandra and her daughter Lucy have used the hospice as a respite for nearly two years. "I've never seen anything close up like that before. It made it so special that they were doing it for the children. Thank you because the hospice is so important to us." Ty Gobaith was opened in 2004 by Hope House Children's Hospice. It provides a facility for children to develop their skills whilst also providing support, respite and advice for parents. The charity relies heavily on voluntary income and 2 Excel's display helped ITV This Morning raise nearly ?Ǭ200,000 pounds to be distributed to a number of Hospices across the UK.

NORTHAMPTON STUDENTS INSPIRED TO FLY HIGH |
20/12/2006 |
Pupils from Northampton were encouraged to follow their dreams on Thursday after a visit to one of the county's most inspirational companies. The day was part of Enterprise Week - an annual UK-wide week of activities encouraging youngsters to be enterprising and turn their ideas into reality.
The Northampton students were invited to meet the two directors of a brand new company - 2 Excel Aviation Ltd. Chris Norton OBE DFC and Andy Offer OBE shared their experiences on just how to turn dreams and ambitions into reality. The two former Royal Air Force Wing Commanders recently retired from distinguished careers in the Service to set up 2 Excel. Chris and Andy both commanded frontline Harrier Squadrons - but creating and launching 2 Excel was a challenge that also required a fierce determination to succeed. They were able to give great examples of applying past experiences and learning to form their new company. 2 Excel launched in May and has exceeded all targets set out in the 2006 business plan.
"2Excel is a great example of how an idea can be realised" said 17 year old Business Studies student Kathryn Taylor from Moulton Secondary School. "The pilot's careers were inspirational to listen too. I know it's a lot of hard work, but I would be encouraged to go away and think how I can develop ideas now. I never knew there was so much going on at Sywell. Everything here is to the highest standard and it's on our doorstep."

THE BLADES GET FOURTH RED ARROWS PILOT |
02/11/2006 |
The world's only full-time aerobatic airline - The Blades - has been joined by a new world-class pilot. Flight Lieutenant Dave Slow, who has only just left The Red Arrows as Red 8, joins the Sywell-based dynamic display team today, Monday 6th November.
The Blades are led by former Red Arrows leader Andy Offer; Dave's arrival makes the team one of the hottest on the display circuit as he joins two more former Reds: Andy Evans and Myles Garland. Brand new this year the Team have already proven a hit with celebrities and the public. They've displayed at over 50 events to over five million people live and over 200 million more through the media.
David John Slow joined the RAF at the age of 21 after gaining a taste for flying whilst studying Agriculture at university. He carried out his Elementary Flying Training at RAF Swinderby on the Chipmunk moving on to the Tucano at RAF Cranwell in 1992 and, in 1993, the Hawk for fast jet training at RAF Valley in Wales.
In 1995 Dave was chosen to fly the Harrier. He completed the Harrier Operation Conversion Unit (OCU) course at RAF Wittering, staying there to join No 1 (Fighter) Squadron. He stayed with No 1 Squadron until 2000 seeing active combat over Kosovo and Serbia for Operation ALLIED FORCE with two other 2Excel pilots: Chris Norton and Myles Garland. For a short while he returned to RAF Valley as a Qualified Flying Instructor and Qualified Pilot Navigation Instructor on the Hawk but by 2001 he had returned to the Harrier as a flying instructor and Electronic Warfare Instructor on 20(R) Squadron.
In 2003 Dave was selected to be the Harrier Display Pilot. Later that year he was accepted in to The Red Arrows and he joined the Team on their five week tour of The Middle and Far East. Dave flew as Red 4 for his first two years and then moved to Red 8 for his final season for which he was also the Team's second in command.
Dave jumped at the opportunity to join The Blades display team when he was asked by 2Excel directors Chris Norton OBE DFC and Andy Offer OBE. "I was very lucky to be offered the chance to join The Blades; my previous experience put me in the right place at the right time. I watched with great interest as The Blades formed but never thought I would get asked to join. I feel very privileged to go from flying in the Reds to an equally challenging job in the civilian sector."

BLADES PICK THE WINNERS AT SYWELL |
24/10/2006 |
Andy Evans and Myles Garland, pilots from the only aerobatic airline in the world, The Blades, chose the lucky prize winners for the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) Grand Draw 2006 at Sywell on Friday. The Blades were chosen because 2Excel donated a once in lifetime chance to fly with The Blades to the Charity.
Tony Hirons, RAFA Communications and Marketing Manager, selected the home of The Blades at Sywell Aerodrome to carry out the prize draw. The airfield was the perfect backdrop for one of the most exclusive prizes ever to be drawn.
A Saab, with its boot full of over 150,000 tickets, sat proudly between two of 2Excel's sparkling orange and black Extras. Blades 2 and 3 hung up their helmets for the day to dive in to the car and help retrieve the prize winning tickets.
"We are delighted to be hosting RAFA's Grand Draw 2006" said Andy Evans, Blade 2 and former Red Arrows pilot. "As ex-members of the RAF we're very keen to continue our support of a charity that looks after our ex-colleagues. Congratulations to winning ticket number 2572031. You really are in for the ride of a lifetime!"

BLUE PETER PRESENTER OVERCOMES TRAVEL SICKNESS WITH THE BLADES |
10/10/2006 |
Blue Peter presenter Gethin Jones flew with The Blades on Friday overcoming his usual bouts of air sickness. Previously, Gethin has flown in a Hawk with The Red Arrows and in a Spitfire and was sick on both occasions. So when The Blades were set a mission by Blue Peter to not make him sick the Team jumped at the chance.
Gethin flew twice in the Team's highly manoeuvrable Extra 300. His first sortie was an introduction to the aircraft and its capabilities but for his second sortie Gethin experienced some of The Blades' more daring manoeuvres during a Blades Display. He was not sick on either sortie.
Flown by Blade 1, Andy Offer, in the front seat of G-OFFO Gethin flew a loop, barrel roll, aileron roll and also flew upside down for over ten seconds, all within a few feet of Blades 2 and 3.
Gethin was extremely excited. "I can't tell you how different I felt flying with The Blades. I enjoyed the sortie so much. That's down to the Team and especially Andy. Thanks so much - I'll definitely be back!"
The pilots helped Gethin feel at ease by explaining every step of the mission and the physics behind each manoeuvre; Gethin knew exactly what to expect and how his body would react. He was aided by a few old fashioned homeopathic remedies and a session with a hypnotist before his second sortie.
"Flying Gethin in order to help him overcome his air sickness was extremely rewarding" said Andy Offer, Director of 2Excel and Leader of The Blades. "Gethin now has a lot more confidence than he had and will step into an aeroplane a lot less apprehensive than he was. We are looking forward to challenging him a little more and we would welcome him back!"
Blue Peter will be broadcasting the footage of Gethin Jones and The Blades on 16th January. The Programme is broadcast on BBC 1 at 5PM.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE THE BLADES 2006 DISPLAY |
18/09/2006 |
This weekend will be the last opportunity to see the breathtaking 2006 display by The Blades Aerobatic Display Team. Next month they will announce the arrival of another full-time pilot and over the winter they will be choreographing a new display sequence to impress us with in 2007.
The Team will dazzle local crowds on Sunday as they perform on home turf for the Sywell Air Show. Rounding the season off in style, the pilots will dedicate their final display to friends, family and those based at Sywell and beyond as a thank you for all their support over the previous months.
Leader of The Blades and ex-Red Arrows Leader, Andy Offer OBE, is looking forward to giving everyone in Northampton their personal display. "It's very appropriate to end our season at Sywell as we will be able to thank the local community and our families for their continued support. Many people in the surrounding area have seen us flying to and from the air shows or practising at Sywell, therefore we are thrilled to demonstrate our full display to all visitors on Sunday."

THE BLADES PAY TRIBUTE TO WWII VETERANS FOR BATTLE OF BRITAIN WEEKEND |
18/09/2006 |
The Blades paid tribute to veterans of The Second World War at the weekend donating their show to the Battle of Britain Air Show at Shoreham Airport, the only air show to take place on the Battle of Britain Weekend.
2Excel has also donated a once in a lifetime chance to fly with The Blades to The Royal Air Force Association. The company chose to support RAFA because of the pilots' RAF Heritage and to acknowledge the valuable work the charity does. Andy Offer OBE, Blade One, said "It's important to pay tribute to those who've fought for our country. RAFA is a very worthy charity and I'm delighted The Blades can support it."
"Shoreham is a beautiful air show" said Blade 2 and ex-Red Arrows pilot, Andy Evans: "I was brought up in Brighton so it was great to return to my home ground and display to friends and family and it's even better that we can also support RAFA on the Battle of Britain Weekend."

BATTLE OF THE ENGINES: BLADE 3 RACES VS MITSUBISHI EVO |
01/09/2006 |
Myles Garland, Blade 3 and ex-Red Arrow pilot, raced a Mitsubishi Evo 9 round a race track in Kent yesterday, beating the car with ease. Myles was racing Fifth Gear presenter Tiff Needell round Lydden Hill race track. It is an extremely small and tight track to fly round so it forced Myles to pull up to eight times the force of gravity to get round the corners on the two lap race. On the hair-pin Myles pulled up and performed an aerobatic manoeuvre known as the Cuban in order to make sure he kept ahead of the car.
"The tight circuit led me to believe that the car would have the advantage" said Myles: "But the manoeuvrability and agility of the Extra 300 LP tipped the balance in my favour. It was very dynamic and challenging to fly and definitely up there with the most exciting flying I have done to date."

HEAD FOR HEIGHTS? DAREDEVIL FROM SOUTHPORT WINS FLIGHT WITH THE BLADES |
15/08/2006 |
Stephen Miller flew in formation with The Blades today after winning a competition through the Southport Air Show. He was entered by his mother-in-law and wife who wrote in describing him as an 'angel who is one in a million'.
Stephen, who has only been in an aircraft once before, is a full-time carer for his terminally ill wife, Helen. He said "My hopes weren't very high when I found out I had been entered but, when I got the call to say I was in the top three I started to get excited. Then, when I got the call to say I had won, I was over the moon."
Stephen's pilot was Blade 2, Andy Evans. Flying in formation with Blade 3 (Myles Garland) the pair did loops and rolls and rounded off with stall turns. Andy said: "He was a very courageous passenger. I couldn't see his face until we watched the tape afterwards but I could hear him laughing. I don't think we could have picked anyone more deserving and enthusiastic."
James, Stephen's nine year old son, accompanied Stephen to Sywell. "I wanted it to be a day for James, he loved being able to meet the pilots and sit in the aircraft. It was my dream come true. It was an amazing, amazing experience."

THE BLADES DISPLAY IN HONOUR OF HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN |
03/07/2006 |
The Blades performed their breathtaking display in honour of Her Majesty The Queen's 80th Birthday Celebrations at Balmoral Castle for 'A Truly Scottish Evening' over the weekend. Since their first public appearance just over four weeks ago they have now displayed in front of more than one and a half million people across England, The Netherlands, Ireland and France. News of their display has been reported across the world as far as China, Australia and South America.
The Blades arrived to a downpour at Dundee Airport on Friday afternoon; but, the Team were lucky with the weather as the clouds in the Dee Valley parted in time for a stunning dusk display. It was a perfect setting with the castle, the mist and the valley in the distance. The crowds gasped and clapped throughout the display as the Team twisted and tumbled above them.
Co-Director of 2Excel, Chris Norton OBE DFC, has spent 14 years of his 21 years in the RAF flying Harriers, primarily on the front line. With combat tours in Iraq, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and Serbia he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1999 and he commanded No. 1 (Fighter) Squadron during the war in Iraq in 2003. Chris said "As true patriots who have spent many years in Her Majesty's Armed Forces, we were delighted to be able to display as such a prestigious event and it is the highlight of our first year."

2EXCEL UNVEIL UNIQUE ADVERTISING PLATFORM AT ADVERTISING FESTIVAL |
21/06/2006 |
The Blades thrilled delegates at this year's International Advertising Festival in Cannes with a spectacular display at last night's Opening Gala Party.
Just as the sun was setting on mid-summer's eve The Team flew in and conducted a display consisting of formation flypasts, rolls and opposition breaks in front of thousands of people who were watching from the Plage de la Croisette.
The Blades can provide a platform for a complete advertising solution for any brand. Andy Offer OBE says: "Our product is exceptionally relevant especially as this year's theme of the Cannes Lions 2006 festival is the 'revolution in advertising affairs'. In our fast moving technological world, ensuring your message is the one that is heard in the media cacophony is increasingly difficult but remains extremely important."
The four aircraft act as a platform for direct mass brand exposure. Quite apart from world-class flying skill, the cutting edge technology in The Blades' aircraft and the company's professional excellence mean the Team is attractive to a broad range of events. Recent events have included T4 'On The Beach' and the opening of the Beckhams' Pre-World Cup Party. The latter saw The Blades exposed to over 39 million viewers and readers across an international platform over TV, print, radio and the web.
The Blades' cutting edge technology includes a sophisticated on board camera system connected to a live TV quality video link, that allows real time transmission of the aircraft's cockpit and external views to receivers on the ground below. Combing this immediacy with innovative emerging advertising and marketing technology, The Blades offering includes an interactive element for any brand, creating viral reach. 2Excel's new and exciting branded content platform will revolutionise 'through the line' advertising.

FIRST LIVE VIDEO DOWN-LINK AT AIRSHOW FOR THE BLADES |
20/06/2006 |
This weekend Lincolnshire crowds will witness a world-premier when The Blades have their first live video down-link from their aircraft to massive screens on the ground. Crowds will be put in the pilots' seats throughout the display watching each manoeuvre at exactly the time it is being performed in the sky above. Those watching will see thrilling footage from 16 different cameras mounted in the cockpit and on the wings of the aircraft; they will see the earth spinning around the pilots' heads, aircraft flying just feet away, and Blade 1, Andy Offer OBE, as he leads the Team through their moves. It is truly unique footage that is set to take air shows in to the 21st Century.
Andy says "Our live video footage is fantastic to watch. It's extremely entertaining and means the crowd have more interaction with the pilots and their display. I have flown at Waddington a number of times and am delighted to return here to display leading our new world-class Team."

THE BLADES BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM |
21/05/2006 |
The Blades performed their first display tonight to stars and celebrities for The Beckhams' Pre-World Cup Party, officially opening the event.
Shortly after the red carpet arrivals, at 2020 exactly in a perfectly timed break in the rain, the four Extra 300 LP aircraft appeared from behind the trees to get the Party started. The four highly manoeuvrable orange and black aircraft were branded with the St George's Cross under their right wings. They flew in from the east and conducted a series of formation flypasts, rolls and opposition breaks in front of the guests who thronged outside the marquee. They flew just feet apart in 'Box', 'Line Astern?' and 'Tango', bending into the small gap between the towns of Harlow and Sawbridgeworth in which Beckingham Palace nestles. The Team had to remain 'flat' below 1500ft and be especially careful not to use the vertical in case they set off the collision avoidance systems of the airliners flying in Stansted airspace overhead.
Over the last few weeks, The Blades have worked closely with the Civil Aviation Authority, the National Air Traffic Service and Stansted Airport, all of whom have been instrumental in making this happen. Beckingham Palace sits under the Stansted Airport flight path just 5 miles from the runway. In the spirit of the World Cup, the Authorities granted special permission for the special aerial event to occur in their congested controlled airspace.
Chris Norton, co-founder and Director of 2 Excel Aviation and The Blades says "Putting on the display at this site was tricky due to the surrounding villages and the complexity of the airspace which we had to work with. However, the pilots are exceptional and their skills really shone through. We are delighted to have been part of the England Team's send-off and we hope England excels in the World Cup."

THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT |
04/05/2006 |
Jamiroquai front man Jay Kay, flew with The Blades at 2Excel Aviation's official launch today. An extremely keen aviation fan, Jay Kay made a spectacular entrance to the launch by flying in with the 4-ship formation as they arrived at airfield. The display included 'The Excel Loop', and the heart stopping 'Blades Break' at closing speeds of 400 knots. Upon arrival, Jay Kay emerged from the plane thrilled and excited with his experience.
With over 70 select national and regional press, industry experts and private guests, 2 Excel Aviation Limited introduced the core of their business units, their distinguished pilots, and highlighted a unique and sophisticated technology system that relays images and visuals directly from the cockpit to screens on the ground.
The Blades went on to perform for the crowds with a truly breathtaking display. Whilst in formation the pilots flew within feet of each other, performing loops, rolls and opposition passes that left the people on the ground awestruck. The pilots flew at around 200 feet for the formation flying but the solo gyroscopic manoeuvres were performed as low as 50 feet. |

THE BLADES RECEIVE THEIR DISPLAY AUTHORITY |
02/05/2006 |
2Excel's display Team, The Blades, received their Display Authority (DA) today. The Team have worked extremely hard to create a safe but dynamic and exciting first show for the general public. It is a legal requirement for every display team to be awarded a DA before they can display to the public. A Display Authority Examiner from the Civil Aviation Authority awards each pilot their DA and it is a testament to the pilots' skill and heritage. |

QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE IS FIRST PERSON TO FLY WITH THE BLADES |
06/04/2006 |
Kerry Katona became the first person in the world today to fly with The Blades Aerobatic Display Team. They are a brand new Team comprising three ex-Red Arrows pilots and a world championship-level aerobatic instructor.
Kerry took to the skies for ITV's Celebrity Daredevil. Her pilot, Blade 3, Myles Garland, introduced her to the aircraft and gave her the safety briefing. She was particularly apprehensive before she flew, taking her time to climb in to the aircraft; but, once she was strapped in, there was no going back!
Kerry performed a series of low level loops and rolls above the Northamptonshire countryside and flew in formation with Blade 1, Andy Offer OBE. She was very vocal in the air! Kerry was up for flying a lot of manoeuvres but she did make a lot of noise. She was great fun to fly and it was extremely entertaining to watch the video afterwards.
